About
“I shine a gentle light into corners of British life - by observing and recreating I seek to illuminate those to whom I owe so much“
Christy Burdock Artist
Christy travels across the country, looking for stories. Through the lives of others, quips and gestures come to life in her work, interpreting and celebrating the hyper local as it sits within the national conversation. She researches groups of people with distinctive identities, and the institutions they gather in. Museums and institutions, were her entry into mainstream society and her work is exhibited within them, in gratitude to the many anonymous people that enabled her to survive and thrive.
When working with museums and institutions, objects and artefacts hold historic truths within their materiality, silently singing from their quiet places on pedestals and within glass cases and wooden frames.
There is a current of intellectual and cultural underpinning to her work, fed by on the ground research within groups gathering to share ideas, and seminars and lectures across London. This continuous, contemporaneous input underpins her work with collections and communities, like scaffolding. She is interested in the interplay between time, geography and the creation and transportation of new ideas, as they travel across Britain.
She has won many awards, travelling transatlantic on the Queen Mary ii ship with the Gordon Peter Pickard Travel Award, won at the Royal College of Art. She has exhibited across the UK in many institutions, including The Baltic, New Art Gallery Walsall, the Royal Scottish Academy - winning the Tatha Prize, the Wilson Museum selling 'Dress Code' that had won the Judd Medical Award at The Royal Society of Birmingham Artists. Also many shows in London, including Christie's. She has drawn and painted the military, farmers, religious groups and people that have just left prison, amongst others. Christy has had solo shows in Salford Museum, Newton Abbott Museum, Bassetlaw Museum, to name a few and is currently working on a new body of work for a museum in England.
