We are at the ‘pulling threads together’ stage of the residency. My work here has evolved, I have responded to the environment and the people. It was always wet, cold and damp, a disaster for paper. Drawing can sometimes look ephemeral and transient, a preparation for something else, rather than an end point in itself. I tackled these aspects by placing my drawing on wood, I felt the work became more permanent, a solid object, something my subjects, that didn’t often go to galleries, could perhaps relate to. These wooden art works were often used as a way of dissolving barriers. A passport into their lives as I waived their little portraits around in the hope they might let me into their lives.
